After Exposure of an Impacted Tooth

Dr. Michael Shnayder recommends that you do not disturb a tooth after it has been exposed. If a surgical pack is placed, do not adjust it. If this pack falls out, do not be alarmed.

Bleeding

Bleeding in your saliva is normal within the first 24 hours after a tooth is exposed. If your mouth bleeds excessively, we recommend that you bite on a gauze pad for 30 minutes. Please contact Village Pointe Oral Surgery if bleeding persists.

Swelling

It is normal to swell after surgery, but we recommend applying an ice pack to alleviate swelling. We recommend that you apply this ice pack frequently during the first 36 hours.

Diet

It is important to drink many fluids. However, during this time you should avoid hot liquids and alcohol. It is also important to eat soft foods on the day of your surgery. Also, strive to return to your normal diet as soon as possible.

Pain

You should start taking pain medication when you start to feel discomfort. Our oral surgeon recommends that you take Tylenol every three to four hours as needed. Ibuprofen can also be taken every three to four hours. If your pain is intense, we recommend taking any prescribed medication.

Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is necessary for establishing good healing. We recommend that you begin cleaning your mouth after each meal on the day after your surgery. Brush your teeth as thoroughly as possible and rinse your mouth with warm salt water approximately six times a day until your mouth is healed.

Activity

Following your surgery, we recommend that you keep your activities to a minimum. You may bleed or throb during exercise. If this happens, we recommend that you stop exercising immediately.
