Before an extraction
Dr. Shnayder reviews the tooth, nearby anatomy, health history, and available alternatives. If the tooth must be removed, the conversation also covers anesthesia and any future replacement plan.
During the procedure
Local anesthetic is used to numb the area. Pressure is normal during removal, but sharp pain should be reported so comfort can be addressed.
Protect the blood clot
Bite firmly on gauze for 30–45 minutes as directed. For 72 hours, avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting, straws, alcohol, and brushing directly over the extraction site.
- Limit strenuous activity for the first 24 hours
- Use ice and medication only as directed
- Drink fluids and begin with soft foods
When to call
Contact the office if bleeding does not slow, pain or swelling worsens instead of improving, or a prescribed medication causes a reaction.
